    Malaysia Flag history
On April 1, 1946, the Malayan Union was founded, which transformed into Federation of Malaya on February 1, 1948. Malaya invited designs from public for the natioal flag in 1947. The competition yielded 373 entries and a flag with 11 alternate red and white stripes and a yellow crescent and a five-pointed star on a blue background in the top left hand corner was chosen as the winner through a public poll held by the Malay Mail. It was designed by Mohamad Hamzah. The winning flag design was slightly modifies (the five-pointed star was modified to an 11-pointed star to represent 11 Malayan states) and it officially adopted on 26 May 1950. The Federation achieved independence from UK on 31 August 1957. On September 16, 1963, Singapore, Sarawak, and North Borneo joined the Federation and the new nation was named "Malaysia" To reflect this, the flag was altered to 14 red and white stripes representing the 14 states. When Singapore separated from Malaysia to become an independent republic on 9 August 1965, the Malaysian flag remained unaltered. The fourteenth stripe is now said to stand for the federal government
