    The state flag of Rhode Island consists of a white field with a gold anchor in the center with a blue ribbon below the anchor bearing the state's motto, HOPE, in gold, all surrounded by thirteen 5-pointed golden stars in a circle. Though officially required, the flag is seldom flown with golden fringe around the edges of the flag. Rhode Island's first state flag was adopted on March 30, 1877 and the current flag was adopted in 1897

    Rhode Island flag colors - meaning

    gold anchor: symbolizes hope (taken from Bible: "hope we have as an anchor of the soul", contained in Hebrews, Chapter 6, verses 18 and 19)
    13 stars: represent the original thirteen colonies that have declared independence from British rule and formed the United States
    HOPE: is the motto of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
